Fraxel® (Scar Revision)

Even years after your last acne flare-up, scars can remain as unwanted reminders of those blemishes. We perform acne scar removal at our Rochester, NY, office with the Fraxel laser.  Fraxel uses laser-generated heat to trigger the body’s natural wound-healing process that creates new collagen. Fraxel is a gentle treatment that requires less downtime than more aggressive laser skin resurfacing treatments.

Expertise Makes a Difference

Laser skin resurfacing performed under the direction of our highly trained, board-certified physicians is safe and can make dramatic changes to your skin’s surface. It’s important to choose a laser resurfacing provider with experience to avoid disappointing results.

How Fraxel Works

Fraxel is the first laser treatment to use advanced fractional technology for skin resurfacing. Instead of laser treatments that removed the top layer of skin, fractional lasers penetrate the skin with thousands of tiny beams to treat only a fraction of the skin in the treatment area. Surrounding skin remains undamaged. This greatly reduces the downtime following the treatment but requires multiple sessions to get the desired results.

That tradeoff—reduced downtime for more treatment sessions—is one that most of our patients are willing to make. The wounds created by the Fraxel laser trigger the production of new collagen, which helps create a smoother, more even complexion.

Do Fraxel treatments hurt?

We apply a cream to numb the treatment area about an hour before beginning the treatment. That minimizes discomfort. Some patients say the laser feels like a rubber band snapping their skin. The procedure can take between 20 and 45 minutes, and many patients return to their normal activities about a day or 2 after their treatments.

How much do Fraxel treatments cost in Rochester, NY?

The cost of Fraxel treatments depends on the patient’s concerns and the number of treatments needed to achieve the desired results. We provide a detailed price quote after your consultation. Cost is one of many considerations of most patients, but with laser resurfacing treatments, safety, efficacy, and results are the most important factors for the providers at Dermatology Associates.

Natural-Looking Results

Fraxel is a popular skin rejuvenation option because it can help improve the appearance of patients’ skin without looking unnatural. It creates real changes that can’t be matched by lotions, creams, or serums and effectively treats a number of other concerns in addition to acne scarring.

We may recommend Fraxel to treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and worry lines
  • Pigmentation by minimizing the appearance of age spots
  • Damage caused by sun exposure
  • Actinic Keratosis (AK), a common pre-cancerous skin condition

We also use Fraxel to treat other scars, such as those that result from surgery or injury. Our practice offers ProFractional™ laser therapy for scar reduction. We may recommend other skin resurfacing treatments, such as Halo™ Pro, Forever Young BBL™, or Vbeam® Perfecta. We can customize your treatment based on your skin type and cosmetic goals.

Common Questions

Are there side effects?

Your skin may feel similar to being sunburned and appear pink or red during the first 24 hours after your treatment. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relief medication is helpful if you experience discomfort. The treated skin will look a little bronze during the first week or 2 and begin to flake and exfoliate. This same pattern occurs after subsequent treatments. Moisturizers can reduce the appearance of flaky skin.

Do I need to take any special precautions?

It’s important to avoid extensive sun exposure for about 4 to 6 weeks before your scheduled treatment. It’s a good habit to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays that’s at least SPF 30. That’s especially important following your treatment.

How long do the results last?

Results are gradual and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in a few months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for complete healing and the production of new collagen and elastin to replace damaged tissue. The better you take care of your skin and protect it from the sun, the better the results.
