Rhinoplasty

If you don’t like how your nose looks, it’s probably the first thing you notice when you see yourself. Dr. Calvin Young offers cosmetic surgery to reshape and refine the nose. Rhinoplasty at our Rochester, New York, practice can help patients from Brighton, Fairport, Webster, and surrounding communities attain the nose size and shape they desire. Dr. Young can help your nose have a more symmetrical, proportioned appearance that balances with your other facial features and enhances your overall look.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Women, men, and adolescents whose facial growth is complete are usually good candidates for rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, to change any combination of the following aspects of their nose:

  • Increasing or decreasing the overall size
  • Reshaping the tip
  • Straightening the bridge
  • Reducing or enlarging the nostrils
  • Correcting damage from an injury

Rhinoplasty can also correct breathing problems due to structural abnormalities in the nose.

Expertise Makes a Difference

Dr. Calvin Young is a highly credentialed plastic surgeon with expertise in plastic surgery of the face. During your private consultation, he will talk with you about what you’d like to change about your nose, examine and analyze all of your facial features, and develop a surgical plan to provide the improvements you want. As part of this process, Dr. Young uses the VECTRA 3-D imaging system to help you envision the potential outcome of your surgery. If you are interested in other plastic surgery procedures like breast augmentation or eyelid surgery, the consultation is a great time to learn more and have Dr. Young answer your questions.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Dr. Young performs rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure using general anesthetic. He may use the open technique, placing the incision along the columella (the outer part of the nose between the nostrils). This technique provides a clear view of the nose’s internal structures and open access to reshaping them. Or instead, he may use the closed procedure, which is performed through the nostrils and does not involve an external incision.

With either technique, Dr. Young reshapes the soft tissues, cartilage, and bones inside the nose to improve its external appearance. He then closes the incisions with fine sutures. A splint may be placed over the nose to protect it for about a week.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From a Nose Job?

Patients are typically ready to return to work, school, and other daily activities in 1 to 2 weeks. Swelling and bruising are normal after rhinoplasty and can be minimized by applying ice packs as directed and keeping your head elevated at all times (even while sleeping) for the first few days. Within 3 months, most of the swelling will be gone and you will see the new shape of your nose. It can take about a year for swelling to dissipate completely, but it is usually not noticeable to others during the process.
