EXPERTISE MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Tummy tuck surgery (also known as abdominoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that flattens the midsection and defines the waistline. It achieves this by tightening muscles and removing excess skin caused by pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. A tummy tuck works best for:

  • Removing rolls of skin and fat
  • Flattening a “belly pooch”
  • Defining the waist

During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Young analyzes your body and determines the best approach to your tummy tuck surgery.

Are You a Candidate for Tummy Tuck Surgery?

You may be a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery if you:

  • Are in good overall health and do not smoke
  • Have maintained a healthy BMI for several months
  • Are not planning any future pregnancies or major weight loss
  • Struggle with loose skin and a protruding abdomen

It is important to remember, however, that tummy tuck surgery is not a weight-loss procedure, but a recontouring of your midsection. The surgery removes unwanted fat and skin, but it does not dramatically change the number on the scale. You should be close to your goal weight before considering a tummy tuck.

How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

Tummy tuck surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under a general anesthetic or M.A.C. plus a local anesthetic. Treatment begins with the doctor making a hip-to-hip horizontal incision just above the pubic area. Unwanted fat is removed, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired, and excess skin is pulled downward and removed. Then the incision is carefully sealed with sutures.

These results create a slimmer, flatter midsection, and the waistline can be further defined with treatments such as liposuction. A tummy tuck scar is typically hidden beneath the underwear line and will gradually fade with time.

What Is Tummy Tuck Recovery Like?

You may have a binder (post-surgical compression garment) in place for around two weeks after your operation. This will help with healing and comfort. You won’t be able to stand completely upright for a few days after your tummy tuck procedure. This is a normal part of the recovery process and will improve as your skin and muscles adjust. You will be advised to take slow walks upon returning home to encourage blood circulation and foster healing. Other instructions, such as how to care for your surgical drains, will be provided prior to your surgery.

Most people can return to work after 10 to 14 days, depending on job requirements. Swelling will subside and your results will become apparent about a month or two after surgery.
