How Do Lip Fillers Work?

Lip fillers are dermal fillers injected into the lips, just beneath the skin. Often formulated with hyaluronic acid (HA), which is found naturally in the body, these gels add volume and hydration to the lips. They can be used to:

  • Enhance the size of naturally thin lips
  • Replace lip volume lost to aging
  • Define the borders of the lips
  • Reduce vertical lines on and around the lips

How Much Do Lip Fillers Cost in Rochester, NY?

The cost of lip fillers depends on the product and the volume injected. These factors vary for each person, so the best way to determine your pricing is to visit us for a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

What Happens During a Lip Filler Treatment?

Your experienced injector will begin by examining your lips and discussing your goals with you to determine a custom treatment plan. He or she will then administer a short series of injections to create your desired look. This process typically takes less than 30 minutes. Most fillers are formulated with a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.

Combining Lip Fillers With Other Treatments

If you would like to enhance your results with other injectables, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, DAXXIFY®, or dermal fillers in other areas of the face, these treatments can be performed during the same appointment.

KYBELLA® is another injectable treatment that can be used with lip fillers. Rather than adding volume, KYBELLA reduces fullness in the submental (double chin) area for enhanced neck and jawline contours.

Lip Augmentation Recovery

You’ll likely notice some swelling and possible bruising that should subside in the next few days, and you’ll need to avoid putting excess pressure on your lips during this time. Other than that, you’ll be free to return to your normal routine.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Most lip fillers dissolve gradually over 6 to 12 months, but the lifespan of your lip filler results will depend on the specific product and how quickly your body naturally dissolves it. Touch-up appointments once or twice a year can extend your look indefinitely.

Can Lip Fillers Be Dissolved?

Yes. Fillers formulated with hyaluronic acid can be dissolved at any time with an injection of hyaluronidase, a natural enzyme that breaks down the gel. We offer a filler dissolving service for those who have a change of heart about their results. Once the hyaluronidase is injected, the filler typically dissolves within 48 hours.

Lip Fillers FAQ

Are lip fillers painful?

We minimize any discomfort during lip injections by taking the following precautions:

  • Using fillers that contain a local anesthetic
  • Preparing the lips with a numbing cream
  • Making the injections with a fine needle

What’s the best age to get lip injections?

Lip injections are safe, effective, and FDA-approved for people who are at least 21 years old. That said, the best age for lip injections is when you would like to enhance the shape and volume of your lips.

How long before I can kiss after getting lip filler?

It’s best to wait 24 to 48 hours to do any passionate kissing to minimize discomfort and optimize your lip filler results.

Do lip fillers change your appearance?

When performed by a skilled injector, these treatments will change your appearance in a natural way by adding fullness, definition, and balance to your lips.

Is one lip filler more natural than another or are they all the same?

Restylane Silk, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA, and TEOXANE RHA 2 are softer than other fillers, which makes them great for increasing lip volume subtly. For the most natural-looking results, be sure to choose a skilled injector and communicate your cosmetic goals clearly.

Should I massage lips after getting fillers?

After administering your injections, your provider may gently massage your lips to evenly distribute the filler and prevent the formation of lumps. Avoid manipulating the lips for a few days to give them time to heal and the filler to settle. Then, you may gently massage the lips, if your injector advises you to do so. We encourage you to contact our team if you have any concerns about lumps or bumps.

Is it possible to overfill the lips?

It is not uncommon for lip filler patients to have “duck lips” for a few days after treatment until swelling subsides. But, it’s a misconception that lips treated with dermal filler are always overfilled. Skilled injectors know how much filler is too much and can provide you with natural-looking results.

How soon before I can wear lipstick or lip gloss?

We know you can’t wait to draw attention to your plump and luscious lips, but we recommend waiting at least 24 hours post-treatment before applying lipstick or lip gloss. This delay gives your injection sites time to heal.

Our team provides lip fillers for people from Brighton, Fairport, and other communities in the Rochester, NY, area. To meet with our experienced team, please request a consultation online or call (585) 272-0700.
