How does the PicoWay laser work?

The PicoWay laser was named for its ultrashort pulses that last just a picosecond. (The human eye blinks at one-tenth of a second, while a picosecond is one-trillionth of a second!) The laser energy passes through the skin harmlessly and breaks up pigment into small enough particles to be flushed away by the body’s natural cleansing processes. The laser energy also increases collagen production in the skin to address wrinkles and acne scars.

What does PicoWay treat?

The FDA-cleared PicoWay laser is a good choice for women and men who have the following cosmetic skin concerns:

  • Age spots, sunspots, freckles, and other benign pigmented lesions
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Acne scars

If you have vascular concerns like angiomas, rosacea, and other redness instead of, or in addition to, the above concerns, consider our Vbeam® laser treatments.

How Much Does a PicoWay Laser Treatment Cost in Rochester, NY?

The cost of laser treatments, including the PicoWay laser, depends on the specific concerns and cosmetic goals of each patient.  When you come to Dermatology Associates for a free consultation, we’ll provide a quote for your procedure.

What is the difference between PicoWay Zoom and PicoWay Resolve?

We use different PicoWay handpieces, laser wavelengths, and spot sizes when treating pigmented lesions versus wrinkles and acne scars. Options include:

  • The PicoWay Zoom handpiece treats brown spots and excess pigment in addition to providing tattoo removal. The spot size can be made larger or smaller to fit the size of the targeted concern, and the wavelength can be adjusted to the darkness of the pigment.
  • The PicoWay Resolve handpiece treats acne scars and wrinkles. This fractional handpiece breaks the laser beam into 100 pinpoints of light that create tiny spaces within scars and wrinkles that the body gradually fills in with new collagen and elastin. Spot size and wavelength can be adjusted for optimal results.

We can use both Zoom and Resolve handpieces in the same treatment session to address a wide variety of concerns during the same appointment.

Am I a good candidate for PicoWay laser treatments?

PicoWay laser treatments are safe on most skin types and areas of the body. The most common areas we treat include:

  • Face and neck
  • Décolletage
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Shoulders

We cannot use PicoWay on skin that is suntanned or has active acne.

Does the PicoWay laser hurt?

Most patients experience low to no discomfort because PicoWay laser pulses are extremely quick and emit less heat than traditional lasers. Actual experiences vary with treatment areas (for example, the face is typically more sensitive than the arms) and targeted concerns.

Is there downtime after a PicoWay treatment?

Because PicoWay uses ultra-short laser pulses, treatments usually require low to no downtime. Patients can resume normal daily activities and apply makeup over treated acne scars and wrinkles the following day. It is common to see mild redness that lasts approximately 8 to 36 hours.

How many PicoWay treatments will I need?

The number of PicoWay treatments needed depends on the condition being treated and your cosmetic goals. While you may see improvement after your first treatment, most conditions require 2 to 5 treatments.
