Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis can negatively affect your confidence and make you self-conscious in social situations. Several treatment options are available to treat excessive sweating, and BOTOX and miraDry are at the top of the list. If you are wondering how these treatments work to improve excessive sweating, keep reading.

How does each work for Hyperhidrosis?

Your sweat glands can overproduce sweat due to medical reasons, a rise in temperature, or strenuous physical activity. However, people with hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating even when these factors are absent. BOTOX works by temporarily blocking nerve signals that activate sweat glands to reduce the amount of sweat your body produces.

During your BOTOX treatment, your provider will administer several injections to the desired areas to reduce sweat production. Typically, your BOTOX results will last around 3 to 4 months.

miraDry was specifically developed to address excessive sweating and improve odor. The miraDry system uses electromagnetic energy to permanently disable sweat glands so patients can get relief from hyperhidrosis. The treatment is administered via a handheld device that is placed on the underarm area to target sweat glands, odor glands, and hair follicles. It was the First FDA-cleared device for treating hyperhidrosis.

How long do results last?

You can expect your miraDry results to last indefinitely; most patients only require a single session. During a clinical trial, 93% of patients no longer experienced hyperhidrosis after 1 month, and 80% of patients no longer experienced odor. Your BOTOX results will only last up to 4 months at which point you will need follow-up treatment.

Your provider will advise you if you are a better candidate for BOTOX or miraDry based on your unique needs.

How long does it take to see results?

You can expect results immediately after your miraDry treatment, with patients reporting an 82% reduction in excessive sweating. With BOTOX, you will need to wait several weeks to get the full benefits of your treatment. Although patients typically only need 1 miraDry session to achieve excellent results, some patients may need a second treatment.

Is treatment painful?

You should experience minimal discomfort during your BOTOX treatment as it injected through very short, fine needles. If needed, your provider will apply a topical numbing cream to the treated areas before your treatment.

You will be given local anesthesia before your miraDry treatment to prevent any discomfort. The device comes equipped with technology that cools the skin while the treatment is being administered.

What’s the downtime?

Neither treatment requires any downtime. You can return to your regular routine immediately after BOTOX and miraDry. You may experience some sensitivity after BOTOX and mild swelling and bruising after miraDry.

The Bottom Line

When searching for a solution for hyperhidrosis, BOTOX and miraDry treatments have their advantages and disadvantages. It’s important to talk to your provider about any concerns you may have before choosing the best treatment for you.
